Italian Parsley, Romaine Lettuce, Strawberries, Spinach, Golden Beets with Greens, Delicato Squash, Rubinette Apples, Early Girl Tomatoes. Well we are finally getting tomatoes on a regular basis! Hope the cold weather holds off so we get a good amount before fall sets in. This is an easy box to use. We've already eaten the strawberries, as usual. I sauteed the Beet Greens last night with a little olive oil, garlic and 2 chopped tomatoes as a side. The tomatoes and lettuce will be used in salads along with the roasted beets. I really like the golden beets, they are sweeter than the usual red beets. The boys will probably try to talk me into making a pie with the apples. That may happen or we'll just eat them for snacks. Cole has already eaten one and declared it delicious! Delicato squash are great for stuffing and soups so it will end up in one of those. Last week was a stressful week so we still have a backlog of last weeks veggies to get through too. It will be a cooking … [Read more...]

Pumpkin, Red Butter Lettuce, Green Butter Lettuce, Spinach, Eggplant, Golden Beets, Mixed bag of Zucchini and Jalapenos, Strawberries, Tomatoes. Can you believe we got a pumpkin already? Well before the tomato season has fully kicked in? If that isn't an indication of the strange cool summer in the San Francisco area I don't know what is! So the pumpkin is "extra" this week due to a packing error with our CSA last week when we should have gotten some summer squash to go along with our padron peppers. We'll take extras anytime! My pumpkin pie loving son was thrilled to see the pumpkin, it just seems darn early to be seeing the fall squash arrive! The strawberries were eaten sliced over French Toast on Saturday morning. The spinach  and beet greens will be creamed to go alongside Prime Rib tonight. The jalapenos were grilled up to go with Chicken Chile Verde on Friday night. The pumpkin will be made into pumpkin pie. The beets will be roasted and added to salads throughout the week … [Read more...]

CSA week 24

Green Leaf Lettuce, Romaine Lettuce, Romanesco, Hamburg Parsley, Celery, Carrots, Strawberries, Padron Peppers. Hooray, we got some peppers! It's been such a weird summer here in the San Francisco bay area. It's usually foggy and chilly here but this year has been unusually so. The unseasonably long cool weather has put crops behind schedule for weeks in some cases. By this time last year our CSA was well into the stars of summer like tomatoes and peppers. This year not so much. We've gotten tomatoes a few times but nothing like past years and we haven't seen any peppers at all until this week. Hopefully this just means we'll have great produce right though the fall when all those tomatoes and peppers finally come in. That's what I'm counting on! This week's share is easy to use. The padron peppers will just be heated up in a very hot pan with a drizzle of oil and generous sprinkle of salt to finish. They are divine with this simple treatment. Add some bread, goat cheese and nice … [Read more...]

Corn, Scallion, Tomatoes, Strawberries, Cabbage, Potatoes, and Onions. I can't believe it's been another week already. It's been a busy one at our house with my son starting middle school. It's been a huge adjustment for him but I think he's getting the hang of it. We really like his school and he has a lot of his buddies there as well which is comforting. His teachers all seem great so far. Hopefully I'll be posting more often now that he's settling in. I have a bunch of dishes that I've prepared and photographed but just haven't taken the time to put up yet. This week's share looks great. As usual the strawberries are mostly gone at this point. I'll grill up the corn and onions tonight to go with some tequila marinated chicken breasts for a mexican dinner. The potatoes will either be made into smashed potatoes or potato salad. The cabbage will become a coleslaw to top pulled pork sandwiches I'm planning to make over the weekend. Easy! … [Read more...]

Celery, Strawberries, Zucchini, Chives, Tomatoes, Purple Cauliflower, Chiogga Beets, Carrots. We went on vacation this week to find the sun! It's been extraordinarily foggy and cold this summer in San Francisco and we were craving some heat. We went up to Angel's camp to stay in our condo there. It was a beautiful long weekend of sun and fun with my boys. The thing we love about our condos is that we can cook! Yes, I even cook on vacation. I just packed up some of the CSA share veggies in our cooler and we enjoyed them. I left that huge Romanesco at home to eat up when we got back. I'll share the pasta recipe using the Romanesco in my next recipe post! This week's share is great. We've already eaten through the berries and tomatoes. The beets are currently roasting in the oven. I promised my son a beet cake and I'll pickle the rest for salads (I had some left from a previous week). I may also make some beet pasta. Just a bit of beet puree added to pasta dough makes it really bright … [Read more...]

Romanesco, Desiree Potatoes, Red Leaf Lettuce, Melon, Chantenay Carrots, Strawberries, Yellow Tomatoes, Parsley Root (and Parsley). I know you are thinking what the heck is that alien looking thing in the top left corner! It's a Romanesco! Want a better look? Isn't it cool? It's like a fractal! I just love the shape of it. I still remember the first time I got one of these in my CSA share. We all peered at it and decided we had never seen such a crazy vegetable. My son calls it dinosaur cauliflower. Romanesco is also called Roman Cauliflower or Broccoflower. The taste is a sort of cross between broccoli and cauliflower. All I know is that it is delicious and I look forward to eating it this week! Not sure how I'll prepare it yet but I know from previous years that I like it. There are lots of other goodies in the box this week too. The yellow tomatoes are always yummy. We've already eaten 1/2 the melon and strawberries for breakfast. I predict I'll be using the parsley … [Read more...]

Onions, Spinach, Red Beets, Sweet Corn, Fennel, Strawberries, Melons, Purple Cauliflower. Wow was this a HEAVY week! This week's share was at least twice as heavy as usual! The bounty of summer is truly in evidence this week! Another WOW for 2 huge heads of fennel! It's a good thing I've discovered great ways to use fennel over the time I've gotten the CSA. If I'd gotten two huge bulbs of fennel my first year I would have freaked out! My son is thrilled to see the melons this week, with strawberries as well it's almost a fruit lover's dream CSA box. We cut into the cantaloupe this morning and amazing doesn't even describe it. Truly the best cantaloupe we've ever had! In just one day the cantaloupe is almost gone and so are the strawberries. So yummy! Do you see that purple cauliflower peeking out from the side of the photo? It is so beautiful! You can't get something like that in a regular grocery store! According to Wikipedia: "The purple color is caused by the presence of the … [Read more...]

Onions, Red Leaf Lettuce, Strawberries, Chantenay Carrots, Heirloom Tomatoes, Broccoli, Cucumbers, Zucchini Is it Wednesday again already? I must admit I'm getting a bit behind this summer with the veggies. I still have the turnips & beets from last week along with 1/2 a head of lettuce and some of the scallions. No worries though, the veggies are so fresh from our CSA that they last a long time. Must do something with those turnips soon though! I did do a great greens saute this week of the turnip & beet greens as a side dish so I used part of them! This week looks great. The strawberries are already gone, in fact several were gone before the picture even got taken thanks to my little 11 year old thief. I think I'll make more pickles with the cucumbers, they were a big hit here and are already half gone. I might make dill this time or maybe just more of the bread & butter. Zucchini will be used in our favorite zucchini pasta dish and there is probably enough to make … [Read more...]

Romaine Lettuce, Red Butter Lettuce, Scallions, Hamburg Parsley, Red Turnips, Walla Walla Onions, Strawberries, Red Beets, Cucumbers. Wow what a bumper crop of veggies this week! Every thing looks great. I immediately topped the parsley and the greens(turnip & beet) and saved them for use as cooking greens. You should always take the tops off root vegetables as you store them because they will last longer. I am excited to see the big bag of pickling cucumbers. I made some great bread & butter pickles last year and have been looking forward to making them again. I will probably pickle the red beets this week as well. While the red devil cake is delicious we can't be eating it every week! I really seem to be overwhelmed with lettuce as I still have 1 and 1/2  heads from last week so we'll be eating a lot of salad this week. I have been seeing a lot of recipes floating around for Lettuce soup but I'm not sure I'm that brave! It is very easy to get behind on lettuce this time … [Read more...]
